These 7 hobbies are all completely free to pick up and you can enjoy and participate in them as an individual.
If you haven’t already started a hobby in this time of enforced lockdown, then you’re really missing out. Not only will a hobby allow you to grow and develop, but it will also help you alleviate boredom and pass the time. Having a hobby will give you something to look forward to every day.
There’s always something to learn from a hobby, whether directly in the skill required for the hobby or from a life lesson learned along the way.
Reading
There are so many choices when it comes to what to read. Even though the choice is a good thing, it can quickly become overwhelming. Especially when trying to find and settle for good material to read.
Start by picking a specific type of material to read. For example, you can choose to read books, journals, articles, etc. There are a lot of places online where you can find free materials of every kind to read.
One of my favorite places to find free books to read online, is Amazon.
Vlogging
With just a mobile phone, you can easily start recording videos to share with others online. We all have things we can share that will benefit others, whether that’s to help them learn something new or to serve as a distraction and source of entertainment.
Speaking can be a form of cathartic release, especially after being alone and all by yourself for quite a while. If starting a YouTube channel has always been at the back of your mind, this is the best time to start. At the same time, you’re stuck at home.
There are various social media platforms that allow video sharing and free online resources on how to start a podcast for free.
Fitness
There’s no better hobby to start than one that will improve your health and well-being. Get into a new fitness regimen that you can pursue and enjoy long-term. Seek out an online community of like-minded people on a similar journey where possible.
Or get an app on your phone for whatever interests you. There’s an app for everything. There are so many ways you can get into fitness. If you don’t know how or where to start, a quick search on Google should point you in the right direction.
Reddit has some great fitness (and other hobby-centered) communities worth looking into. Having some accountability to help you stay on track is always a bonus.
Feel like the walls are closing in on you while stuck at home in isolation? Check out these self-care things that you can do to help you get through them.
Writing
Start writing something, anything as a hobby. There are so many things you could write about. Anyone can write; you need to decide what you want to write about.
Writing doesn’t have to be a structured or major endeavor like writing a book or starting a blog, for example. It could be anything at all. It could be something simple like writing reviews or comments online. Remember your hobby is something for you to pass the time and have fun with.
Journaling can be a good place to start if you don’t already do it and want to start writing as a hobby. Or you could start writing reviews for all those Netflix programs you’ve been binge-watching.
Meditating
While some may argue that meditation should be a normal aspect of day-to-day life, it’s not something that comes naturally to some of us. We live in a world where being frazzled is sometimes perceived as being busy.
It’s almost a luxury to take time out to pause and self-reflect from time to time, But staying centered on ourselves while shutting everything out is something that we need to make a conscious effort to participate in.
Not only does meditation offer incredible rewards, it’s also completely free and does not require any special resources.
Language Learning
If you have no desire to learn a new language, then you’re probably a unicorn. Start your language learning journey now that you’re stuck at home and free of most of the distractions of the outside world.
There are many free online tools and resources to help you learn any language of your choice. From free websites and YouTube channels to free mobile phone apps, there’s an abundance of resources to help you learn a new language. You are the only one standing in your way.
Learning a new language is a fun and rewarding experience. More so when doing it at your own pace and within the comfort of your own home.
Online Business
How about picking up a hobby that will also reward you financially? Well, you can definitely start a hobby that will make you money while you’re at it. And there are many ways to do this.
From offering creative freelance gigs on sites like Fiverr to starting a fully-fledged business online. Some side hustle options fall under the hobby category that can make you some money.
Some of which have already been touched on above. Being able to make money from a hobby is like plucking money out of thin air. Especially when it’s a zero-cost hobby, to begin with.
